Costsaver: Iconic China with Yangtze Cruise

Day 1 - Arrive Beijing
Welcome to China's sprawling, high flying and innovative capital city, Beijing. With one foot in the future and the other in the past, Beijing is nothing if not unique. An impressive six UNESCO World Heritage sites and a splurge of temples make the city a historian's dream, whilst modern masterpieces like the CCTV Building and the Galaxy Soho ensure Beijing is a city taking its place as one of the front runners in contemporary design. At your hotel, meet up with your Travel Director before getting to know the rest of your travel companions over dinner this evening.
Accommodations: Holiday Inn Express Temple of Heaven
Meals: Dinner

Day 2 - Beijing Sightseeing
Today's sightseeing tour will see you dive straight into the magic of Beijing, kicked off in the world's largest public square, Tiananmen Square. Claiming an incredible 440,000 square meters of space and flanked by Soviet style buildings, the square was the brainchild of Chairman Mao and flexes some serious Communist design ideals. Next up, you'll head over to the UNESCO-listed Forbidden City, the largest palace complex in the world featuring courtyards, palaces, pavilions and gardens all ringed by 3.5km of scarlet colored citadel walls. Take your time exploring this impeccably preserved complex, imagining what life would have been like for the 24 emperors who ruled here during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This afternoon enjoy some free time at leisure and perhaps explore the enchanting hútòngs or alleyways that crisscross the city. This evening you could opt to join us for the spectacular ‘Legend of Kung Fu' show. Mixing traditional martial arts with modern theater, watch as Kung Fu artists from all over China display an art form that is utterly synonymous with Chinese culture.
Accommodations: Holiday Inn Express Temple of Heaven
Meals: Breakfast

Day 3 - Beijing and the Great Wall
Widely considered a Top 10 life experience, today's the day you'll be able to tick off ‘visiting the Great Wall of China' at Juyongguan on your lifetime to-do list. China's greatest feat of engineering and one of the most famous sights in the world, the wall stretches some 21,000 km from East to West China, snaking its way like a dragon through deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus. Walking along this impressive piece of history, be sure to take in the views of the wall winding off into the distance and appreciate the sheer will and determination of the millions who helped to create this incredible fortification, the greatest relic of the Ming Dynasty. Visit a Jade factory, then enjoy your lunch in a local restaurant. This afternoon, and after some much needed downtime, why not see out your time in Beijing with an optional dinner, a sumptuous banquet of local specialties including Beijing Kao Ya, known as Peking Duck to the rest of the world.
Accommodations: Holiday Inn Express Temple of Heaven
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 4 - Beijing - Xi'an
Waking up to a free morning in Beijing, make the most of your final hours here by joining our Choice Experience to the UNESCO listed Temple of Heaven. A vast religious complex in the old outer city and one of the country's most important Imperial temples, this place is widely considered one of the greatest achievements of traditional Chinese architecture, with a layout that displays the belief that the earth is square and heaven round. This afternoon catch a flight to the historical city of Xi'an. Once home to emperors, warriors and the Chinese elite, Xi'an is the kind of place that keeps historians up at night, imagining what could have been. It's one of the few cities in China that's still managed to hold on to its imposing 12 meter high city walls, and is of course best known as the home of the magnificent Terracotta Army. This evening and with time to yourself, perhaps head out to explore the busy lanes of the Muslim Quarter.
Accommodations: Holiday Inn Express Xi'an Bell Tower
Meals: Breakfast

Day 5 - Xi'an Sightseeing
We hope you're ready—today’s visit to the Terracotta Army is bound to leave you in awe! One of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries in modern history, this vast, life-sized army—thousands strong—was uncovered entirely by chance when local farmers were digging a well. Each warrior, unique in appearance, has silently guarded China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, for 2,000 years. You’ll learn all about it from your Travel Director before enjoying a local-style lunch. Afterwards, step into China’s past with a visit to traditional Yaodong cave dwellings. Carved into hillsides, these homes have sheltered families for countless generations, though this way of life is fading. As part of our MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences, this visit helps preserve a way of life that’s fast disappearing. Looking for more history? Join a Choice Experience to visit Gao’s Grand Courtyard, a 400-year-old Ming Dynasty home with elegant halls, shadow puppet shows, and traditional crafts. This evening, dive deeper into history with a Choice Experience Tang Dynasty show with dinner. Feast on a dumpling banquet before vibrant costumes, dance and music bring the era’s rich culture to life.
Accommodations: Holiday Inn Express Xi'an Bell Tower
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 6 - Xi'an - Chongqing - Yangtze River Cruise
Heading for the train station this morning, you'll catch a high-speed train to the next stop on your China tour package, bound for the booming city of Chongqing. As one of the most densely populated cities on earth it's little surprise that Chongqing throbs with life and energy, but the many, many people who live here are welcoming and friendly, and the vision of the city spilling over onto both banks of the Yangtze River is a real sight to behold. Speaking of the Yangtze, catch your first glimpse of the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world as you arrive here, then after dinner get even better acquainted as you board your river cruise ship, your home for the next three nights.
Accommodations: Victoria Katarina
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 7 - Yangtze River Cruise
Drift along the legendary Yangtze River and soak up the stunning views. Grab a drink, kick back on deck and take in this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Your first stop is Shibaozhai, or ‘Precious Stone Fortress’—a jaw-dropping 12-storey, 56-meter-high wooden pagoda on the side of a cliff. Reach the temple through a striking red pavilion built into the rock, then take your time exploring before cruising on. Want to uncover more local legends? Two incredible Choice Experiences await. Step into the eerie world of Fengdu’s ‘Ghost City,’ a two-thousand-year-old complex of shrines, temples and monasteries dedicated to the afterlife. Or, for an action-packed evening, experience the Three Kingdoms Show—a dazzling spectacle of equestrian stunts, acrobatics and special effects that brings the legendary battles of the Han, Wu and Ming dynasties to life. After an unforgettable day, return to your ship and continue your Yangtze adventure.
Accommodations: Victoria Katarina
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8 - Yangtze River Cruise
Wake up to another incredible day on the Yangtze. This morning, choose from two Choice Experiences: wander through White Emperor City, where ancient rulers and poets once soaked in epic views of Qutang Gorge, or take on the hike up Chijia Mountain for a jaw-dropping panorama of the legendary Three Gorges. Back on board, cruise through Qutang Gorge’s towering cliffs, past the misty peaks of Wu Gorge, and into the dramatic landscapes of Xiling Gorge. This afternoon, swap the cruise for a small motorboat and glide along the Goddess Stream, where towering limestone cliffs, covered in lush greenery, give you a whole new, breathtaking view of this mighty river.
Accommodations: Victoria Katarina
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9 - Yichang - Shanghai
Make an early start this morning and ascend to the top deck of the Yangtze cruise ship to enjoy the views of the vast Three Gorges Dam – the largest dam in the world and a serious labor of love with a production timeline that spanned decades. After disembarkation at Maoping Port there is another great photo opportunity to get shots of the Dam before transferring to Yichang Airport to catch your flight to the stunning city of Shanghai.
Accommodations: Ocean
Meals: Breakfast

Day 10 - Shanghai Sightseeing
Diving into all that Shanghai has to offer, this morning's sightseeing tour will start off at The Bund, the city's famous waterfront hub. Once a place of fast paced trading akin to New York's Wall Street, today The Bund is the place to be in Shanghai. All the top restaurants, hotels and shops can be found on this exclusive patch of real estate, where art deco and neoclassical buildings rub shoulders with monolithic skyscrapers. Continuing on to a Silk Factory Outlet where vibrant colors are the aim of the game, you'll then stop off at Shanghai's premium shopping destination, Nanjing Road. Stretching out over three miles and housing over 600 businesses, it won't be hard to see why shopping is serious business in Shanghai. Go wild in the stores selling high end couture and vintage finds alike, then this evening perhaps opt to join your fellow travelers on our visit to a daring acrobatics show.
Accommodations: Ocean
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 11 - Shanghai Free Day
With a full day to explore your way and the last day of your China value tour, be sure to make the most of it! If it's culture you're after, you're in the right place; Shanghai has one of the most revered cultural scenes of any city in the world with a wealth of museums and galleries showcasing contemporary and historical treasures alike. You may choose to take a Choice Experience to the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao with its 36 bridges built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Or if you prefer to discover the city on your own, you could head to the Old Town for a glimpse of Shanghai of old or visit Yuyuan Garden, a true delight with its shady alcoves and fish filled pools. Eating is a hugely important social activity in China and undoubtedly one of the best ways to experience the culture, so be sure to sample all the wonderful delights that cross your path on your adventures.
Accommodations: Ocean
Meals: Breakfast

Day 12 - Depart Shanghai
With memories of ancient kingdoms, serene landscapes, tasty local delicacies and feats of engineering wizardry still fresh in your mind's eye, your incredible adventure through the vast and beautiful land of China will come to an end today. After saying goodbye to your fellow travelers, make your own way to the airport and catch your onward flight to your next destination.

Shanghai: Jewish Quarter Tour (4 hours)

Half day tour to Jewish Quarter in Shanghai

Background

Shanghai was the only city in the world that provided a safe home for World War II refugees without papers. As a result, approximately 32,000 Jews, known among themselves as "Shanghailanders," settled in this fascinating Chinese city. Like the names Schindler, Wallenberg and Sugihara, Shanghai has become synonymous with rescue and refuge during the fascist-dictated times when 6 million Jews perished and at least 35 million Chinese were killed and wounded. At one point, there were at least seven synagogues in Shanghai, but today very little evidence of this once vital community remains.

Highlights

Ohel Moishe Synagogue. The Ohel Moishe Synagogue is a European style temple that was once the centerpiece of the Hongkou District. The original synagogue was founded in 1907 by a Russian Jew, and was moved to this site twenty years later. Once a synagogue for Orthodox Russian and German Jews, it was also at various times, the headquarters of the Zionist youth organization Brith Trumpeldor (Betar) and the isolation ward of the Shanghai Mental Hospital. The synagogue is now a recognized historical site and a Jewish Refugees Memorial has been built next to it.

Yichang
Located in the Hubei Province, in the east mouth of the Three Gorges, Yichang is called 'the throat of Chuan'. The city's history reaches back 7,000 to 8,000 years. The main attraction in the area however is the Three Gorges Dam, which is said to be one of the largest construction project in the history of man and the world's largest dam. Slated for completion in 2012, the dam will generate enough electricity to carry one-ninth of the country's total generated power. When the reservoir is filled, it will completely submerge two of the three famous gorges, along with the surrounding area. Needless to say, the enviromental and cultural impacts of this dam are highly controversial.
Yangtze River
The Yangtze is the longest Asian river, about 3,400 mi long. It rises in the Kunlun Mountains in Qinghai (Tsinghai) Province, and flows to its mouth in the East China Sea, about 14 miles north of Shanghai. Ocean-going vessels may navigate the river to Hankou, a distance of almost 600 miles from the sea. For about 200 miles inland from its mouth, the river is virtually at sea level. The delta flows through Jiangsu Province, largely a deltaic plain consisting of silt deposited by the Yangtze and one of the chief rice-growing areas of China.
Chongqing
Chongqing is a port city with the largest area and diverse population in China. It is a tourist attraction, commercial city, and focal point of the unique Yangtze Three Gorges tourist industry. Chongqing attracts visitors from home all over for its cultural heritage and tourist attractions. The city is starting point of the Yangtze River Cruise. Other attractions include Dazu Grottoes - valuable works of art carved during the ninth century. Visit Gold Buddhist Mountain, a rich repository of diverse animals and plants; there's Fishing Town - one of three ancient battlefields in China. Traveling in Chongqing allows savoring of delicious local food, such as Sichuan cuisine and world-famous hot pot dishes. Handicrafts made from bamboo have been enjoying great popularity among visitors. Chongqing's nickname as "Fog City" or "Furnace" is no exaggeration. The best time to visit Chongqing should be in spring, autumn and winter.
Xi'an
Xi'an - with five million inhabitants and capital of Shaanxi Province - is one of the more pleasant of Chinese cities, more prosperous than any other city in inland China except Chengdu, with streets full of Japanese cars, stores flooded with temptations, and stylish locals in new discos. It's far richer than the surrounding area, a fact which becomes clear after a bus ride into surrounding plains. The city is also a primer in Chinese history, as between 1000 BC and 1000 AD it served as imperial capital for eleven dynasties. Find a wealth of important sites and relics hereabouts: Neolithic Banpo, the Terracotta Army of the Qin emperor, the Han and Tang imperial tombs, and in the city itself, the Goose Pagodas of the Tang, the Bell and Drum towers and Ming city walls, as well as two museums holding a treasury of relics from the most glamorous parts of Chinese history. The city is very popular with foreign residents, and many come to study, as the colleges are regarded as some of the best places to learn Chinese.
Beijing

Beijing is the country's economic, cultural and transportation center as well as a famous historical capital of China. Located in northwest North China Plain, Beijing is the second largest city in China with a population of more than 11 million and is ideal to visit all year. There are numerous museums and libraries with the largest collection of books in the country. It also serves as a center for science and technology. It is a hub of communications, with good railroad and air links with all parts of China and with major cities of the world, thus facilitating the rapid development of tourism as an important industry in Beijing. Beijing is an ancient city with a long cultural history. The four feudal dynasties--Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing had all set up their capital here and it became a most concentrated place of the country's scenic spots and historical sites. The best known are the Palace Museum, the Summer Palace, the Great Wall and the Temple of Heaven. Beijing aims to develop into a modern international metropolis..
