After lunch, stand in Tiananmen Square, admiring the architectural landmarks that surround one of the world's grandest public plazas, and then follow in the footsteps of Ming Dynasty Emperors on an expertly-guided tour through the magnificent Forbidden City. This evening, sit down to a festive Peking Duck Banquet with wine. Meals B+L+D

Day 3: Walk Atop the Great Wall

Situated farther from the capital than other sections of China's most famous landmark, the Great Wall at Mutianyu draws fewer visitors. You'll be able to join this morning ritual as a Tai Chi master leads a private one-hour class for our guests. Then explore the narrow lanes of a Hutong, one of the city's few remaining enclaves of traditional, centuries-old courtyard homes. It has been estimated that more than half a million laborers and craftsmen worked for nearly 40 years to complete the tomb - and the thousands of terra cotta soldiers, horses and chariots that were to serve the Emperor in the afterlife. Day 11: Ashore in Fuling

Early risers can join an invigorating Tai Chi lesson before a lavish buffet breakfast is served in the restaurant. Later this morning, you have an option of two experiences. The first choice is to visit Fuling Project 816. Hidden in the Wuling Mountains, the project is the world's largest man-made military cave. The vast underground cavern was built by more than 60,000 laborers. Initiated in the 1960's and designed to house China's first nuclear reactor, construction was halted after 17 years—before the project's completion and before any nuclear material could be produced. The tunnels and cavern remained a closely guarded secret for nearly 50 years until the Government revealed its presence in 2002.The second choice is a visit to White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum and a local market. The museum is nearly 150 feet underwater, and showcases ancient rock carvings in the river bed that date from AD 763. The visit will also introduce you to some of the Yangtze's flora and fauna. Next, stop at a local market to explore the region's rich culinary culture, including a vast array of pickles, which Fuling is famous for.

Day 12: The Dramatic Gorges of the Yangtze

You can choose from two excursions around the Gorge. The first is a hike along the Yangtze Explorer Trail to a private lookout, just for guests on the ship, for a champagne reception and a spectacular view of the 12 peaks of Wushan at 3,000 feet.Alternatively, enjoy a journey along the serene waters of the Daning River, known as the Lesser Three Gorges. After a scenic ferry ride, you'll board a small boat to explore the enchanting Madu River.Return to the ship for lunch as the Explorer cruises into Wu Gorge, renowned for massive cliffs that rise sharply from the water. As you head upstream, note the coffins stowed high within the limestone cliffs above, a legacy of the region's early inhabitants. In the evening, discover the world's largest and most sophisticated ship-lift system. From your vantage on the VIP Deck, you'll experience the Three Gorges Ship Lift, an elevator that can raise (and lower) ships nearly 400 feet in 40 minutes, a remarkable time-savings when compared to the 4 hours that it takes to traverse the Dam's network of five locks. Meals B+L+D

Day 13: The Three Gorges Dam + Fly to Shanghai

Early risers can again join a Tai Chi lesson before this morning's breakfast. You will have two options for your morning excursion.Disembark the cruise, and take a quick visit to the Three Gorges Project River Closure Park before transferring to the Yichang Airport for your included flight to Shanghai. Upon arrival, transfer to your city-center hotel. Meals B

Day 14: Waterfront Bund Walk + Shanghai Museum East

Enjoy a leisurely morning before setting off on a walking tour along the Bund, Shanghai's waterfront historical district. The area has significant European influence where Gothic, Baroque and Art Deco architecture contrasts with the contemporary glass structures that now dominant most of China's skylines. Afterwards, immerse yourself in the country's rich history with a visit to the Shanghai Museum East. Housing a renowned collection of ceramics, jade, bronze, coins and other treasures from China's dynasties, the museum is regarding as one of country's best. Return to the hotel for an evening at leisure. Afterwards, join an optional tour to Zhujiajiao Water Town, an ancient town on the outskirts of Shanghai that is known locally as 'pearl stream.' Enjoy an atmospheric boat ride to take in the traditional homes, bridges and serenity of the town. Meals B+L

Day 15: Discover Shanghai

After breakfast, your guided city tour begins in Yu Yuan Garden, originally established in 1577 by a government officer as a tranquil retreat for his aging parents. Hailed as a spectacular example of classical Chinese landscape design during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, you'll discover a sublime ensemble of plantings, lotus ponds, winding paths, pavilions and bridges. Browse in the bustling Old City Bazaar. Next, enjoy a local lunch before a stroll along the town's photogenic streets. This evening, gather with your fellow travelers for a congenial farewell dinner. Meals B+L+D

Day 16: Depart Shanghai

After breakfast, you'll be escorted to the airport for your homeward journey. Meals B

Featured Destinations
Yangtze River
The Yangtze is the longest Asian river, about 3,400 mi long. It rises in the Kunlun Mountains in Qinghai (Tsinghai) Province, and flows to its mouth in the East China Sea, about 14 miles north of Shanghai. Ocean-going vessels may navigate the river to Hankou, a distance of almost 600 miles from the sea. For about 200 miles inland from its mouth, the river is virtually at sea level. The delta flows through Jiangsu Province, largely a deltaic plain consisting of silt deposited by the Yangtze and one of the chief rice-growing areas of China.
Beijing

Beijing is the country's economic, cultural and transportation center as well as a famous historical capital of China. Located in northwest North China Plain, Beijing is the second largest city in China with a population of more than 11 million and is ideal to visit all year. There are numerous museums and libraries with the largest collection of books in the country. It also serves as a center for science and technology. It is a hub of communications, with good railroad and air links with all parts of China and with major cities of the world, thus facilitating the rapid development of tourism as an important industry in Beijing. Beijing is an ancient city with a long cultural history. The four feudal dynasties--Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing had all set up their capital here and it became a most concentrated place of the country's scenic spots and historical sites. The best known are the Palace Museum, the Summer Palace, the Great Wall and the Temple of Heaven. Beijing aims to develop into a modern international metropolis..

Xi'an
Xi'an - with five million inhabitants and capital of Shaanxi Province - is one of the more pleasant of Chinese cities, more prosperous than any other city in inland China except Chengdu, with streets full of Japanese cars, stores flooded with temptations, and stylish locals in new discos. It's far richer than the surrounding area, a fact which becomes clear after a bus ride into surrounding plains. The city is also a primer in Chinese history, as between 1000 BC and 1000 AD it served as imperial capital for eleven dynasties. Find a wealth of important sites and relics hereabouts: Neolithic Banpo, the Terracotta Army of the Qin emperor, the Han and Tang imperial tombs, and in the city itself, the Goose Pagodas of the Tang, the Bell and Drum towers and Ming city walls, as well as two museums holding a treasury of relics from the most glamorous parts of Chinese history. The city is very popular with foreign residents, and many come to study, as the colleges are regarded as some of the best places to learn Chinese.
Chengdu
The main inland access city to Tibet, Chengdu is the capital of the "Heavenly State". Most known for its natural habitat and research center for giant pandas, this sprawling city boasts a population of over 11 million.
Lhasa
Lhasa is the capital of the autonomous region of Tibet, located in southwestern China. The city's most famous attraction is the Potala, the former residence of the Dali Lama. It is an impressive palace built on a ridge overlooking the city. Rich in history, some of it very recent by the region's standards, Lhasa was occupied by the Chinese Communists in 1951. It was in 1959 that the Dali Lama fled the country, thus marking the beginning of the 'Free Tibet' movement. Many of the religious and cultural treasuers were damaged or destroyed in the late 60's during the Cultural Revolution, but many of Lhasa's treasures still remain.
Chongqing
Chongqing is a port city with the largest area and diverse population in China. It is a tourist attraction, commercial city, and focal point of the unique Yangtze Three Gorges tourist industry. Chongqing attracts visitors from home all over for its cultural heritage and tourist attractions. The city is starting point of the Yangtze River Cruise. Other attractions include Dazu Grottoes - valuable works of art carved during the ninth century. Visit Gold Buddhist Mountain, a rich repository of diverse animals and plants; there's Fishing Town - one of three ancient battlefields in China. Traveling in Chongqing allows savoring of delicious local food, such as Sichuan cuisine and world-famous hot pot dishes. Handicrafts made from bamboo have been enjoying great popularity among visitors. Chongqing's nickname as "Fog City" or "Furnace" is no exaggeration. The best time to visit Chongqing should be in spring, autumn and winter.
Shanghai
Shanghai is a teeming metropolis of 11 million, bustling with energy, towering skyscrapers, art deco buildings, honking traffic, and shopping crowds. Once here, visitors will find Eastern ways abound: Tai Chi along the Bund, the serenity of exquisite ponds and gardens, and an endless flotilla of sampans edging along the Huangpu River. Explore Shanghai old and new: the busy bazaars and alleyways of the Old Town, Yu Garden, Wuxingting Tea House, Long Hua Temple and more.

Shanghai: Jewish Quarter Tour (4 hours)

Half day tour to Jewish Quarter in Shanghai

Background

Shanghai was the only city in the world that provided a safe home for World War II refugees without papers. As a result, approximately 32,000 Jews, known among themselves as "Shanghailanders," settled in this fascinating Chinese city. Like the names Schindler, Wallenberg and Sugihara, Shanghai has become synonymous with rescue and refuge during the fascist-dictated times when 6 million Jews perished and at least 35 million Chinese were killed and wounded. At one point, there were at least seven synagogues in Shanghai, but today very little evidence of this once vital community remains.

Highlights

Ohel Moishe Synagogue. The Ohel Moishe Synagogue is a European style temple that was once the centerpiece of the Hongkou District. The original synagogue was founded in 1907 by a Russian Jew, and was moved to this site twenty years later. Once a synagogue for Orthodox Russian and German Jews, it was also at various times, the headquarters of the Zionist youth organization Brith Trumpeldor (Betar) and the isolation ward of the Shanghai Mental Hospital. The synagogue is now a recognized historical site and a Jewish Refugees Memorial has been built next to it.
