Day 1: Welcome to Beijing

On arrival at the airport, you'll be warmly greeted and escorted to our luxurious hotel in the heart of the capital.

Day 2: In + Around Beijing

Today's sightseeing begins with the beautiful Summer Palace, erstwhile seasonal retreat of China's emperors. Set on wooded hills surrounding a tranquil lake, this assemblage of pavilions, palaces and gardens offers a fascinating look into Imperial life long ago. After lunch, stand in Tiananmen Square, admiring the architectural landmarks that surround one of the world's grandest public plazas, and then follow in the footsteps of Ming Dynasty Emperors on an expertly guided tour through the magnificent Forbidden City. This evening, sit down to a festive Peking Duck Banquet with wine. Meals B+L+D

Day 3: The Great Wall

The Great Wall stretches for nearly 4,000 miles across northern China - its oldest sections dating back more than 2,000 years when various states and dynasties first began to build these defensive walls. A few centuries after these earliest sections were constructed, Emperor Qin Shihuang consolidated them into a single, massive fortification to guard his empire against Hun invaders from the north. Succeeding emperors maintained, reconstructed and built anew, and much of what is seen today is the result of work that was done during the Ming Dynasty. As a result the wall is not uniform throughout its length; situated farther from the capital than other parts of the Great Wall, the section at Mutianyu draws fewer visitors and is celebrated for its many defensive towers and splendid setting amidst the rugged mountains. Ascending by cable car, you'll walk atop the Great Wall here at Mutianyu as our expert guide shares dramatic stories of its past. For lunch today, we'll take you to the famous Brickyard Restaurant, conveniently located nearby. Back in the city, the rest of your afternoon. This evening you'll be wowed at a Chinese Acrobat Show at the Red Theater. The show features death-defying acts, mind-blowing tricks, and graceful choreography . Meals B+L

Day 4: Fly to Yichang + Embark your Yangtze Cruise

This morning, you'll enjoy a guided tour of the Temple of Heaven ; it's a resplendent example of Ming Dynasty design and engineering that also offers fascinating insight into ancient Chinese beliefs in numerology and cosmology. The temple's tranquil grounds are the perfect place for our specially arranged private class with a Tai Chi Master. Then explore the narrow lanes of a Hutong, one of the city's few remaining enclaves of traditional, centuries-old courtyard homes. Visit a local family living to gain a deeper understanding of life in Beijing's traditional neighborhoods. After sightseeing, we'll take you to the airport for your included flight to the river city of Yichang. On arrival, you'll be escorted to the pier to board the Yangzi Explorer II, China's finest river ship. Settle in to your balcony stateroom and refresh before dinner is served in the Explorer's elegant restaurant. Choose from a tempting array of international and regional Chinese dishes, accompanied by free-flowing wine. Following dinner there will be a Captain's Welcome Reception. Meals B+L+D

Day 5: Xiling Gorge + The Three Gorges Dam

Early risers can start the day with invigorating Tai Chi exercises and then breakfast. This morning, discover the world's largest and most sophisticated ship-lift system. From your vantage on the VIP Deck, you'll experience the Three Gorges Ship Lift, an elevator that can raise (and lower) ships nearly 400 feet in 40 minutes, a remarkable time-savings when compared to the 4 hours that it takes to traverse the Dam's network of five locks. This afternoon, you'll have the choice of two experiences. The first option is a visit to Wuyuan Cave where we'll board a wooden sampan and float on a river through the cave itself. At the end of this gentle ride, we'll enjoy the unique and renowned green tea of this region, Enshi Yulu, which will be brewed from a mountain spring along with delicacies from the local Tujia Tribe. The second option is a visit to Badong Museum along with a trip to Wu Gorge Lookout for panoramic views of the countryside.Later this afternoon, the Yangzi Explorer will navigate through Xiling Gorge, the longest of the river's Three Gorges. Then as the river widens and sweeps through groves of orange and pomelo trees, you'll experience the tranquil side of life along China's mightiest river. This evening enjoy an outdoor cultural show, A Journey Through a Thousand Years in Badong. Meals B+L+D

After lunch, you'll step off ship for one of three options that showcase the beauty of the surrounding Three Gorges mountains. The first choice is an excursion to nearby White King Town where 365 stairs lead to a beautiful overlook of the area. We'll return to the ship for lunch followed by a drive to another scenic view from the Three Gorges Summit. A small shuttle and easy 15 minute walk will lead to stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The second choice for today is a guided and easy one kilometer (3/4 mile) walk along the beautiful Poetic Trail in Qutang Gorge. The third choice is to take an hour-long coach ride to the Three Gorges Summit to enjoy a magnificent sunset. After dinner, there is an opportunity to attend a lecture by a local scholar for an engaging presentation exploring the historical and contemporary importance of 'City of Poems'. Meals B+L+D

Following breakfast, you'll step off ship for one of three options to discover the history and culture of China. The first choice is a visit to Shibaozhai, known as the Precious Stone Fortress, is a craggy hill on an island in the center of the Yangtze River. A multi-storied red pavilion abuts the hill, providing a walkway to the temple at the top.The second choice is to take a ferry to the ancient riverside town of Xituo where we'll take a short walk of 180 steps to a shuttle. We'll be driven to the top of the village, called the ‘ladder to the sky,' for spectacular views and then will descend for a total of 1,314 steps downhill.Lastly, you can journey to Huanghua Ilsand, boasting a rich history dating back to the Song Dynasty when a fortified city was established on the island. Meals B+L+D

Day 8: Disembark in Chongqing + Fly to Xian

Day 9: The Terra Cotta Army

Farmers stumbled upon the site while digging a well in 1974; today the Terra Cotta Army is still regarded as China's greatest archaeological discovery. Set out this morning to visit the excavation site and marvel at the exquisite details of these clay warriors buried 2,000 years ago to guard the tomb of China's first emperor. It has been estimated that more than half a million laborers and craftsmen worked for nearly 40 years to complete the tomb - and the thousands of terra cotta soldiers, horses and chariots that were to serve the Emperor in the afterlife. After lunch, you'll take part in a hands-on workshop to craft your own terra cotta warriors before visiting the ancient defensive walls of the city before returning to your hotel for time at leisure before heading out this evening to witness the Tang Dynasty Show, accompanied by a delectable dinner. Meals B+L+D

With your informative guide, you'll explore the Garden of the Master of Nets . Originally laid out 1,000 years ago during the Song Dynasty, this classic Chinese garden is one of the city's most refined with landscaped waterways, pavilions, meandering pathways and a delicate footbridge a mere 12 inches wide! Indeed, the diminutive Inner Garden was the model for the Ming Hall Garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Then explore other facets of Suzhou's architectural legacy at the impressive Panmen Gate. Before returning to Shanghai, you'll visit a local workshop to see and learn how silk is made. This evening is at leisure. Meals B+L

Three Gorges
The Three Gorges is a place of stunning beauty and impressive geological formations along the Yangtze River in China. This scenic and historically important area can be enjoyed while cruising down the Yangtze, with panoramic views of the surrounding cliffs. The region is the largest geological park in China, boasting southern China’s oldest metamorphic rock base and thousands of animal and plant fossils.
Xiling Gorge
Chongqing
Chongqing is a port city with the largest area and diverse population in China. It is a tourist attraction, commercial city, and focal point of the unique Yangtze Three Gorges tourist industry. Chongqing attracts visitors from home all over for its cultural heritage and tourist attractions. The city is starting point of the Yangtze River Cruise. Other attractions include Dazu Grottoes - valuable works of art carved during the ninth century. Visit Gold Buddhist Mountain, a rich repository of diverse animals and plants; there's Fishing Town - one of three ancient battlefields in China. Traveling in Chongqing allows savoring of delicious local food, such as Sichuan cuisine and world-famous hot pot dishes. Handicrafts made from bamboo have been enjoying great popularity among visitors. Chongqing's nickname as "Fog City" or "Furnace" is no exaggeration. The best time to visit Chongqing should be in spring, autumn and winter.
Xi'an
Xi'an - with five million inhabitants and capital of Shaanxi Province - is one of the more pleasant of Chinese cities, more prosperous than any other city in inland China except Chengdu, with streets full of Japanese cars, stores flooded with temptations, and stylish locals in new discos. It's far richer than the surrounding area, a fact which becomes clear after a bus ride into surrounding plains. The city is also a primer in Chinese history, as between 1000 BC and 1000 AD it served as imperial capital for eleven dynasties. Find a wealth of important sites and relics hereabouts: Neolithic Banpo, the Terracotta Army of the Qin emperor, the Han and Tang imperial tombs, and in the city itself, the Goose Pagodas of the Tang, the Bell and Drum towers and Ming city walls, as well as two museums holding a treasury of relics from the most glamorous parts of Chinese history. The city is very popular with foreign residents, and many come to study, as the colleges are regarded as some of the best places to learn Chinese.
Yichang
Located in the Hubei Province, in the east mouth of the Three Gorges, Yichang is called 'the throat of Chuan'. The city's history reaches back 7,000 to 8,000 years. The main attraction in the area however is the Three Gorges Dam, which is said to be one of the largest construction project in the history of man and the world's largest dam. Slated for completion in 2012, the dam will generate enough electricity to carry one-ninth of the country's total generated power. When the reservoir is filled, it will completely submerge two of the three famous gorges, along with the surrounding area. Needless to say, the enviromental and cultural impacts of this dam are highly controversial.
Shanghai
Shanghai is a teeming metropolis of 11 million, bustling with energy, towering skyscrapers, art deco buildings, honking traffic, and shopping crowds. Once here, visitors will find Eastern ways abound: Tai Chi along the Bund, the serenity of exquisite ponds and gardens, and an endless flotilla of sampans edging along the Huangpu River. Explore Shanghai old and new: the busy bazaars and alleyways of the Old Town, Yu Garden, Wuxingting Tea House, Long Hua Temple and more.

Shanghai: Jewish Quarter Tour (4 hours)

Half day tour to Jewish Quarter in Shanghai

Background

Shanghai was the only city in the world that provided a safe home for World War II refugees without papers. As a result, approximately 32,000 Jews, known among themselves as "Shanghailanders," settled in this fascinating Chinese city. Like the names Schindler, Wallenberg and Sugihara, Shanghai has become synonymous with rescue and refuge during the fascist-dictated times when 6 million Jews perished and at least 35 million Chinese were killed and wounded. At one point, there were at least seven synagogues in Shanghai, but today very little evidence of this once vital community remains.

Highlights

Ohel Moishe Synagogue. The Ohel Moishe Synagogue is a European style temple that was once the centerpiece of the Hongkou District. The original synagogue was founded in 1907 by a Russian Jew, and was moved to this site twenty years later. Once a synagogue for Orthodox Russian and German Jews, it was also at various times, the headquarters of the Zionist youth organization Brith Trumpeldor (Betar) and the isolation ward of the Shanghai Mental Hospital. The synagogue is now a recognized historical site and a Jewish Refugees Memorial has been built next to it.
